About Us
The arrival of the CQU students marks an opportunity for both UC and CQU students to gain international experience and cultural competence. The Engineering Diplomats host events prior to the CQU students' arrival to raise awareness for the benefits of this program. We also strive to develop a sustainable support system beyond their arrival at UC through collaboration with existing student organizations and other partnerships. My Involvement
Last summer, I was invited to participate on a volunteer committee organized by the Honors and Engineering colleges at UC. The committee was to be comprised of mechanical and electrical honor students and the purpose was to create a student group focused on the arrival of the first senior class from our partner engineering school in Chongqing, China. Our initial committee was composed of 4 students, and 2 main faculty members. Throughout the fall and spring of 2016-2017, our small committee planned events to bring awareness to the arrival of the Chongqing students including chinese food events, information sessions, and participation in Worldfest. We also worked with faculty and Chongqing students to create a Peer Mentorship Program that would provide guidance to the new students while also providing a valuable experience for UC students to gain leadership experience and learn about another culture without leaving the country. Since our initial formation, our small committee has expanded into four committees including Communications, Marketing, Sustainability, Planning, and Peer Mentorship which support our organization as a whole. peer mentorship programStructure
Mentor/mentee pairs will be randomly matched. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering students will be assigned to CQU students of their respective majors when possible. All other majors will be randomly assigned to either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering students. Our goal is to have 1:1 peer mentorship, but depending on the number of current mentors and incoming CQU students, each mentor will have up to but no more than 3 mentees. Mentor/mentee pairs will be combined into larger teams. As teams, they attend various group activities, and compete together in the Team Olympics.
