Cultural & Global Growth
My volunteer trip to Villas Mastatal, Costa Rica was an exercise of adaptation and understanding.
The culture of the entire country varied greatly from my life here in America. This was such a rewarding opportunity because not only did I gain a better understanding of a culture so different from mine, but I was also challenged to adapt to this culture as it was out home for 7 days. With each trip abroad my view of the world grows into more than just my immediate surroundings. With each step outside of my "comfort zone" I become a more confident, well-adjusted, and overall adventurous person. |
Professional Growth
I am currently finishing my third co-op rotation overall but my first rotation with The Shepherd Color Company and am gaining experience completely different from my previous design co-op. As a maintenance co-op I have gained quality hands-on experience in manufacturing; working in manufacturing has allowed me to design, work with mechanics, purchase necessary parts, and assist with installation of projects.
Being able to work on a project from the initial design to installation has expanded my understanding of many things such as hydraulic systems, sheet metal, and welding to name a few. Also, as a primary contact on my projects I have grown in my communication skills through contacting vendors, contractors, and other engineers throughout the plant. I have grown so much as an engineer in this position and am very grateful for the experience. |
extracurricular involvement & leadership experience
This spring I decided to join the Alpha Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Rho here at the University of Cincinnati, a sorority for engineering students. I have met some of the brightest, most encouraging women through Phi Rho, and they are an amazing support system to have. Phi Rho is such a great way to network with other engineers, seek guidance and advice from older students, and make incredible friends. This summer I decided to run for the Director of Philanthropy position. Although a new member, I believe I am ready to practice the leadership skills I have developed in my first three years here at UC. I enjoy volunteering and am very excited to be able to bond with sisters while doing so, and help non-profit organizations, such as our philanthropy the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. |
